July–August
Planning Begins
• Selectboard reviews the current year's budget performance.
• Department heads begin identifying operational needs, equipment purchases, and capital projects for the upcoming fiscal year.
• Long-term financial priorities are discussed.

September–October
Department Budget Requests
• Department heads submit proposed budgets and capital requests.
• Revenue projections and anticipated expenses are updated.
• The Selectboard begins preliminary budget discussions during public meetings.

November–December
Budget Workshops
• The Selectboard reviews each department's proposed budget.
• Requests are evaluated based on community needs, available revenues, and long-term financial planning.
• Adjustments are made as needed during publicly warned meetings.

January
Proposed Budget Finalized
• The Selectboard finalizes the proposed operating budget.
• Budget information is prepared for inclusion in the Town Report.
• Residents are encouraged to review the proposed budget before Town Meeting.

February
Town Report Available
• The Town Report is published and made available to the public.
• Residents have an opportunity to review the budget and prepare questions before Town Meeting.

March
Annual Town Meeting
• Voters review and discuss the proposed budget.
• Residents vote on the articles requiring voter approval.
• Once approved, the budget becomes the Town's financial plan for the new fiscal year.

Throughout the Year
Budget Monitoring
• The Selectboard monitors revenues and expenditures throughout the fiscal year.
• Budget amendments or transfers are considered during public meetings when necessary.
• Financial reports are reviewed regularly to ensure the Town remains fiscally responsible.

This timeline is intended to give residents a general overview of the budget process. All budget discussions are conducted during publicly warned Selectboard meetings in accordance with Vermont's Open Meeting Law, and public participation is encouraged.
