Couples may be married anywhere in Vermont once they obtain a valid Vermont
marriage license. A local Justice of the Peace or other authorized
officiant can perform the ceremony.
Step 1: Obtain a Marriage License
Before a ceremony can take place, you must obtain a Vermont marriage license from a town clerk in Vermont.
You may apply at the Ferrisburgh Town Clerk’s Office. At least one party must a be a resident of the town or both parties must be from out-of-state with the ceremony to be performed in Addison County. Blood tests are not required. There is no waiting period to use the license but it must be used within 60 days of issuance. The license is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued.
What to bring:
- Valid photo identification
- Information about parents (names and birthplaces)
- Payment for the marriage license fee $80.00 plus $10.00 for a certified copy.
It is recommended that couples apply a few days before the ceremony to allow time for processing
Step 2: Schedule an Officiant
Marriage ceremonies may be performed by:
- A Justice of the Peace
- A judge
- A member of the clergy authorized to perform marriages
Ferrisburgh has several elected Justices of the Peace who may be available to perform ceremonies. Availability, location, and any ceremony details should be arranged directly with the officiant.
Please note that performing wedding ceremonies is at the discretion of each Justice of the Peace.
Step 3: Hold Your Ceremony
Your ceremony can take place anywhere in Vermont—for example:

After the ceremony, the officiant will complete the license and return it to the town clerk for official recording.
